The SCC set up a mock toll booth Wednesday morning to protest the recent announcement that a new Pattullo Bridge would be a tolled bridge.

Surrey Civic Coalition council candidates Grant Rice and Stephanie Ryan wave to morning commuters who agree with SCC’s opposition to tolling the Pattullo Bridge. Surrey Civic Coalition School Trustee candidate Ijaz Chatha being filmed by a news crew while taking part in the protest.

Ryan, who has campaigned for better public transit and against singling out Surrey for tolls, said, “If the Campbell government gets its way, all three bridges taking commuters to and from North Surrey will have tolls,” while no other highway projects in BC have tolls.

“Either all the major crossings in the lower mainland should be tolled or none of them should,” she said. “The Sea to Sky Highway has no toll and neither do the new Bennett Bridge in Kelowna or the new Pitt River Bridge.”

Grant Rice, another SCC council candidate, said, “while the provincial government punishes Surrey again and again, the Surrey First council just rolls over and plays dead.

“If you want councillors who will take a firm stand against Surrey being singled out for the only tolls in the province, then elect SCC councillors,” said Rice.
