SCC Calls on Surrey To Eliminate Cosmetic Pesticides Use

Jim McMurtry wants to bring protection from cosmetic pesticides use to the City of Surrey.

McMurtry, a city council candidate with the Surrey Civic Coalition, successfully waged a 10-year battle with the Surrey School District to have the use of cosmetic pesticides banned on school property. He continues his campaign with the city.

“I’m calling on Mayor Dianne Watts to come clean – environmentally clean – with her true plan for a bylaw on the cosmetic use of pesticides,” said McMurtry who stated the pesticides have been linked to cancer and many ailments in children, who have more porous skin.

McMurtry said council candidates were asked if they supported a bylaw on the residential and commercial use of pesticides at the all-candidates meeting on Nov. 4 at Earl Marriott Secondary. The only candidate not to stand up was Marvin Hunt.

McMurtry said, ”I was delighted to see all other current council members and the mayor herself stand up, but I wonder if they misheard the question.”

Sixteen municipalities in B.C. and all cities in Ontario and Quebec have now adopted bylaws on pesticide use. McMurtry said he hopes Surrey won’t wait another 10 years.
