Candidate for City Council |
|
Surrey has become a have-not city and needs someone who will advocate for better transit service and get more schools built. I fully understand that planning for schools and transit becomes even more crucial as Surrey grows into BC’s second major city.
- Surrey resident for 25 years
- organizing representative for the BCGEU
- formerly an outreach assistant for MP Penny Priddy
- currently serve on Surrey’s Public Art Advisory Committee
- volunteer as a Big Sister and for Sunnyside Acres Heritage Society
- UBC graduate (wrote my honours thesis on the lack of commercial development in Surrey City Centre)
I ran as an SCC candidate for City Council In 2008 and came in 11th place, with more than 14,000 votes. Since then, I served two terms as President of SCC.
I write opinion columns on Surrey politics for the Georgia Straight, the Province and the Vancouver Sun newspapers.
I want to work together with the Board of Education and other levels of government to ensure that Surrey’s infrastructure needs – schools, hospitals, public transit – are adequately planned for in light of our city’s growth. We need to continue to protect our parks and farmland.
I believe much more can be done to create good jobs in Surrey City Centre, so South Fraser residents are not forced to commute so far, over bridges which may be tolled in the future. I have also consistently been an advocate for the revival of light rail service along the Interurban Rail line in Surrey.
I support our arts and culture community, including a private sector developer contribution program for public art in the city and the creation of a cultural granting program.
I look forward to working together with the rest of the SCC team this November to make Surrey even better.
