Environmental and social justice should be primary considerations in Surrey’s economic growth. I will work hard to ensure that developers properly consult citizens and community groups in neighbourhood planning.
I am currently working on my Master of Urban Studies degree at Simon Fraser University where my research focus is on food systems and food security.
I am actively involved in the Surrey Urban Farmer’s Market. I am a member of the Surrey/White Rock Food Action Coalition and a Director with the Farmland Defence League of BC. I have participated in the planning of the Flavours of Surrey event the last two years with city staff and members of the Agricultural Advisory Committee.
I participated in Surrey’s Sustainability Indicators and Targets Task Force for the past year and believe that without a rigorous sustainability scorecard for development applications and building permits, the environmental and social goals of the Sustainability Charter will not be achieved.
The financial stability of Surrey is a concern. The Build Surrey program calls for external borrowing of $195 million and internal borrowing of $43 million in the five-year capital plan. Control over many of these projects has been surrendered to the Surrey City Development Corporation. The SCDC’s hand-picked board lacks the expertise to effectively oversee these initiatives. I believe in full, separate, and transparent accounting for these multi-million dollar projects.
