For the past six years, I have been the lone voice in opposition to the Surrey First group. During that time, Surrey has continued to grow rapidly but hasn’t received any capital funding for new schools. It’s time Surrey had more voices that understand the concepts of smart growth and the importance of City Councillors and School Trustees working together.

Elder civic statesman Bob Bose was first elected to Surrey City Hall as an Alderman in 1978, and re-elected in 1980, 1982 and 1984. He was elected Mayor in 1987 and re-elected Mayor in 1990 and 1993.

Bob was a member of the Board, Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) 1988 through 1996 inclusive and has served on numerous committees of the Board both as Alderman and as Mayor. However, his main focus was in the areas of land use planning and transportation, having chaired the GVRD Transit Committee from 1980 to 1982 and serving on various land use and transportation committees continuously through to 1996.

Bob has served on the Board of BC Transit and the Vancouver Regional Transit Commission. He chaired the Strategic Planning Committee of the GVRD through four of the five years leading to the region’s Strategic Plan embracing both land use and transportation plans, adopted in late 1995. In recognition of that contribution, Bob was named honourary life member of the Planning Institute of BC.

Bob has held a variety of executive and committee appointments in the Scouting movement for a period of nine years.

Bob joined the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, Vancouver Laboratory at UBC, to head the Chemistry Section in 1966 where he established a laboratory for molecular structure determination, principally employing magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Bob researched natural products chemistry including the so called red tide or paralytic shellfish toxins and has been published in both Canadian and International Journals.

Bob is currently a Vice President of Cycling BC, a director of B.C. Randonneurs (Marathon Cycling Club), and a director of the Ocean Park Community Association. He enjoys hiking, photography, rowing, cross country skiing, and competitive marathon cycling.
