The Surrey Civic Coalition has advocated for light rail transit in Surrey since we formed in 2002.
Translink is currently looking at transportation improvement options for Surrey, including extending Skytrain, building light rail transit and providing increased bus service.
We believe Skytrain is too expensive and takes decades from concept until it actually has riders. We also believe Surrey’s transportation needs have outgrown simply more busses and Surrey has always been shortchanged when it comes to bus routes. We believe, like many other cities, that light rail transit gives the best bang for the buck.
SCC Councillors will work with Translink and the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society to restore passenger rail on the old Interurban line, initially linking Scott Road with Kennedy, Newton, Sullivan, Cloverdale, and Langley. Eventually, service could be extended further east, as far as Chilliwack.
Once this service has been approved, a spur line could be built north from the Newton Station to link with Skytrain in Whalley and then east to Guildford. A rapid bus service could fill this need in the meantime.
This year, long after SCC has been calling for it, Mayor Watts has also jumped on the light rail bandwagon and expressed interest in bringing light rail transit to Surrey.
